White Rock, a part of Metro Vancouver, is a small city on the U.S. border with a dry, warm climate (relative to areas north of the Fraser River ) and a splendid promenade and cafe district along Boundary Bay. People in fashionable new neighbourhoods in nearby Surrey sometimes claim to live in White Rock, but there’s at least one key difference. 2011 federal census figures show that close to 30 per cent of White Rock’s population is over the age of 65, compared with 12.1 per cent in Surrey and 13.7 per cent in the City of Vancouver. Another year, another TransLink funding proposal
In its most recently posted quarterly report, Metro Vancouver’s transit authority forecast that it would provide 370 million passenger trips during 2012. In the nine months ending September 30, traffic was up 5.5 per cent from the previous year.
TransLink is struggling to expand its system to serve more passengers, notably with the current construction of the Evergreen rapid transit line in the northeast sector. A growing transit system provides numerous benefits, including labour mobility, increased educational opportunity, and a better quality of life for seniors, kids and many other people who don’t drive. Driving the South Fraser Perimeter Road
This was a very soft launch.
In early December, 2012, the opening of the new Port Mann Bridge received widespread media attention. The opening of the South Fraser Perimeter Road’s eastern section was generally overlooked, although an official media release was slipped on to the government’s website. Continue reading
